Biography
Although he doesn’t consider himself a linguist, Joshua probably speaks the greatest number of languages on campus. He has always been curious about linguistic and cultural differences, having lived in the Middle East as well as South and East Asia. He studied Hebrew in Israel, and then French and English at Edith Cowan University in Perth. Later, he completed a PhD in Asian Studies at the University of Western Australia, with a focus on Chinese Studies. After doctoral studies, he taught in South Korea at Woosong University, before returning to join the faculty at Sheridan. Currently learning Sanskrit and Tibetan, Joshua brings a wealth of experience to a multitude of HASS units covering history, sociology, religion, and Chinese. His particular area of expertise is the spread and influence of Tibetan Buddhism in Chinese societies – the theme of his recent book. Joshua also organises Sheridan’s biennial Indian Ocean Studies Conference, actively promoting research into these respective languages and religions.
